Aconitum carmichaelii 'Arendsii' ('Arendsii Group') - AUTUMN FLOWERING MONKSHOOD
Late blooming Monkshood with azure-blue flowers. Suitable for cooler areas.
Award of Garden merit by Royal Horticultural Society (UK).
Very poisonous plant - handle with gloves!
Usually grows into about 3.5-4' tall x 1-1.5' wide clumps (can get taller in ideal conditions). Glossy and firm leaves, blue flowers in September to October, often until first frost, when all the perennials are finished blooming or burned by the freeze.
Full sun, half shade (also light dappled shade), in hotter climates prefers some shade, average soils with consistent moisture (ideally), tolerates clay, but never waterlogged soils (tuberous roots can rot). Adaptable to soil and pH.
Hardy in zones 3 to 7.
Deer and rabbit resistant. This species was introduced from Central China.
THIS IS EXTREMELY POISONOUS PLANT, SO ALWAYS HANDLE WITH GLOVES AND LONG SLEEVES!
Animals avoid it, but it's better not to plant it where little kids may come in contact with it.
This is slow to establish, but long-lived perennial, the best is to choose the spot wisely and don't disturb it much later on. It is not invasive, stays in clumps, doesn't self-seed (the seeds also often don't get ripe).
For perennial border, naturally looks very good in woodland gardens, woodland edges, along streams. Can be combined with perennials like Iris, Phlox paniculata, Physostegia, Persicaria amplexicaulis, Rudbeckia, grasses like Panicum virgatum, Molinia.
Pot size : square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot
