Alcea rugosa - RUSSIAN HOLLYHOCK
Rust free and healthy hollyhock! Pollinator friendly, attracting hummingbirds, vigorous, underused and easy to grow.
Robust plant, reaching 6' of height x 2' of width, gray-green wrinkled leaves, pale butter-yellow flowers (4" in diameter) in June and July. Flowers are edible.
Full sun, average, medium rich soil with average moisture or drier, soils that have tendencies to drain fast or dry out. Don't plant in wet or waterlogged soils.
Russian Hollyhock as any other hollyhock is short-lived perennial (lives about 2-3 years, a bit longer-lived on well drained soils), sometimes sold as biennial, but stays in garden by self sowing.
Deer and rabbits avoid it, it's usually trouble free plant. So far, we observed the only pests - Japanese beetles that attacked our plants once, which reduced the ornamental effect, but this happens to other plants too.
For sunny border, better in the center or as a background plant. Drier beds, herb gardens, cottage gardens, can be used in pollinator gardens.
Pot size : square 3.5" x 5" deep pot
