Summer and early fall flowering perennial, reaching height of 1'-1.5' and 0.5'-1' of width.
Fragrant reddish-pink flowers usually in July - August, or up to September, the foliage dies back shortly after the end of flowering.
Full sun, half shade, drained soils are the best (with some addition of sand or rock), medium moist to dry soils.
It will self-seed, if not dead-headed.
Also called autumn onion or cliff onion, native to central states of USA and part of Midwest, see the USDA distribution map.
Hardy in zones 3 to 8. Deer and rabbit resistant plant, attracts butterflies, native bees and birds.
In the past culinary plant, also Native Americans used it as cough and cold remedies and as insect repellent.
