Aster tataricus 'Jindai' - TATARIAN ASTER 'JINDAI' (the latest blooming aster)
Very late blooming Aster, usually the latest one. 1" lavender blue flowers in clusters, large coarse leaves with reddish fall color.
Vigorous, very drought tolerant, but can also become a thuggish plant. It spreads wide via rhizomes, so it is recommended to use it right = better in stressing environment that limits the spreading (dry, somewhat leaner soils, competition of roots of trees).
In ideal conditions (rich loamy soil with more optimum moisture) 'Jindai' can spread aggressively.
Blooming Time: from September till November (usually till frosts)
Size: 3-4' tall x 2-3' and spreading wide
USDA Zones: 4-9
Culture: sun, average soils and drained to dry soils. Adaptable to heavier soils if they stay drier. Avoid waterlogged soils! Very drought tolerant.
Moisture Needs: medium (average), medium-dry to dry
Origin: Native to Eastern Asia (from China to Japan, Korea and Siberia). Naturally grows in rocky or well drained subalpine meadows and marshy areas in the mountains. 'Jindai' was discovered in Jin-Dai Botanical Gardens in Tokyo, Japan, as a short form of Aster tataricus (which does reach 7-8' in height)
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes / yes
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: yes / yes. Bees, honey bees, moths, butterflies. Can host catterpillars of some moths and butterflies. Seeds attract small song birds.
Attracts Hummingbirds: no
Plant Combinations: Best in larger sunny and drier flower beds in sun, sunny woodland edge, pollinator garden, cut flower gardens, deer resistant planting, xeriscape. We recommend combining it with more vigorous medium-sized or taller plants goes well with Echinacea, Achillea, Agastache, Amsonia, Aster, Baptisia, Coreopsis verticillata, Monarda, Nepeta, Oenothera, Penstemons, Platycodon (taller ones), Rudbeckia, Salvia nemorosa hybrids, tall Sedum, Solidago, Stachys, Vernonia lettermannii, Yucca, and grasses like Bouteloa, Muhlenbergia, Sporobolus, Schizachyrium scoparium, Sorghastrum or Panicum.
'Jindai' can be seen in large planti ngs for example in Chicago Botanic Gardens or in Lurie Garden in Chicago.
Pot Size: square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot
