Later blooming Astilbe (August), more tolerant to sun and drought than other cultivars.

24-36" tall x 18-24" wide clumps of dissected leaves, panicles of reddish-purple flowers. Spent flowers persist on the plants into winter and make nice winter structure!

Upright growth, strong stems, can be used as groundcover.

Part sun (with constant moisture), otherwise half shade to full shade. Average soils, loam, soils with higher content of organic matter, preferably neutral or slightly acidic. Grows fairly well in clay.

Average moisture needs, more tolerant to droughts, but still loves medium to moist soils (moist/wet soils too).

Suitable for zones 4 to 8/9.

Deer and rabbit resistant, pollinator friendly plant. Tolerant to black walnuts.

Best in half shade/shade gardens, woodland gardens, under canopy of bigger trees. Good companions are Actaea (Cimicifuga), Alchemilla, Aruncus, Brunnera, Dicentra, Helleborus, Hosta, Ligularia, Lilium martagon, Polygonatum, Primula, Tricyrtis, ferns and spring ephemerals like Mertensia, Trillium, Sanquinaria,... and grasses like Carex or Hakonechloa.

Great cut flower.

'Purple Candles' Astilbe is reliable perennial and can be seen for example in Lurie Garden in Chicago.
