Large sport of Japanese Painted Fern, reaching 3' of height and 4' of width (up to 6').
Discovered in Plant Delights Nursery (NC) in the 90's. Fronds (leaves) have darker wine-red stems and silvery-green leaves. Slowly spreads into wide clumps.
Best in half shade, dappled shade or shade garden, in average to loamy soil with average moisture to moist soils.
Hardy in zones 3 to 8.
Deer and rabbit resistant, black walnut tolerant.
Best companions are larger Bergenia, Brunnera, Cimicifuga (Actaea), Chrysogonum, Hosta, spring ephemerals, Helleborus, Primula, grasses like Carex or Hakonechloa.
