Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance' - JAPANESE SEDGE 'ICE DANCE'
Partially evergreen, very vigorous ground covering sedge for half shade or shade. Reliable and well performing sedge that received received the Outstanding Plant Award from the International Hardy Plant Union in 2002 and Merit Award by Missouri Botanical Gardens.
12" tall (with flowers in late spring) x 12-18" wide nicely arching clumps. Leaves are 0.5" wide with narrow white stripes on edges and remain evergreen in warmer ares and semi-evergreen in colder zones.
Best in half-shade to shade, in average moist (medium) to moist soils - heavier, clayish, average soil, organic rich, loam. In cooler areas can be grown in full sun (with adequate moisture), but the foliage color seem to look better in half-shade, where it can't be burn by the sun.
Brought to USA for first trials in by plantsman Barry Yinger, who discovered 'Ice Dance' during a plant scouting trip in Japan, soon after it was introduced to horticulture market by Hines Nursery in 1996.
Hardy zones 5-8. Deer and rabbit resistant grass, virtually pest and disease free plant (the only problems can occur is burning by the sun or dry tips in too dry soil).
Cool season grass (active growth in cooler part of the season - spring), that slowly spreads to form very dense groundcovering colonies, that compete many weeds. Best for half shade to shade gardens, woodland edges, bigger groundcovering masses under trees, along streams, looks great with Actaea (Cimicifuga), Brunnera, ferns, Heuchera, Hosta, Helleborus, iris cristata, Phlox divaricata, Polygonatum, Primula, spring ephemeralds and spring bulbs.
