Chasmantium latifolium - RIVER OATS
Tough grass for any situation - sun, half shade, shade, and any soil from dry to moist. And also great solution for dry shade! For sun location needs more moisture.
The ideal conditions are moist, fertile soil and some little shade during the day, where it will reach 4' of height, but it will adapt to virtually any soil.
Usually grows to3-4' of height and 1.5-2.5' of width.
Flat and nicely arching ornamental seed heads appear in mid summer and start with pale green, turn to tan later turn to light brown. The move nicely in the breeze and look even better in back light.
Leaves are ornamental and somewhat remind of bamboo leaves. The foliage fall color is golden-yellow but only it the grass is in full sun! Otherwise after the first frost, the leaves turns coppery and then brown, but ornamental through out the whole winter, until you cut them back in pre-spring.
Native to Midwest, eastern USA, Northern Mexico, see USDA distribution map.
Older scientific name is Uniola latifolia, other common name Indian Woodoats.
Hardy in zones 3 to 8. Perfectly deer and rabbit resistant and black walnut tolerant plant. Doesn't suffer with pests or diseases.
Attracts butterflies, because it's a host plant for Pepper & salt skipper butterfly, Bells road side skipper butterfly, Bronzed roadside skipper butterfly.
Excellent plant for nearly all year round interest (contrast and texture), easy to grow and adaptable.
River Oats does reseed and can reseed up to overwhelming feel, so leave some more room for this plant or remove the seedlings where unwanted. It can be used as tall groundcovering plant, because it can selfseed into dense growth.
Valuable shade tolerant grass, very good in dry shade, where other plants can fail.
Looks great in the background of flower border (keep an eye on too much self-seeding), shaded garden, native plant garden, dry shade garden, naturalized area, along streams and water bodies.Great as cut flower or for dry flower arrangement.
Due to it's wide adaptability can be combined with many, better medium to taller perennials (Echinacea, Helianthus, Phlox, Rudbeckia, Sctutellaria incana, Sedum telephium, etc.)
