Chrysanthemum x rubellum 'Mary Stoker' - HARDY GARDEN MUM 'MARY STOKER'
This superior cultivar, selected in 1942 for its vigor, durability and quality, is still a favorite and in cultivation to this day! 'Mary Stoker' is a single-flowering mum that attracts some pollinators, honeybees and butterflies (including Monarchs). Surprisingly heat and humidity tolerant!
A fast growing and very vigorous selection, it is also more hardy and bit more tolerant to some shade. It also blooms a bit earlier than other mums, starting in late summer (lets say from August 'til September). The single, soft yellowish flowers sport a pink haze that is more present on older flowers. This cultivar forms nice wide clumps of basal leaves; very durable, easy to grow, and trouble free.
Garden mums require some drainage, because avoiding excessive winter moisture is critical for their survival. Our experience is that they do well even in clay that drains naturally (is not compacted), but some amending with little bit of sand and compost will ensure their successful growth. Don't plant in waterlogged soils. If you want more compact growth, pinch back the stems before 4th of July (but no later) - 'Mary Stoker' is quite sturdy and doesn't have the tendency to flop. Fairly long-lived perennial; it's recommended to divide the older clumps after several years of growing to support the vitality and vigor.
The whole plant is aromatic, and the flowers are edible and be used for decorating salad or food. Due to the aromatic leaves, this plant is also completely deer and rabbit resistant. Cut flowers last for over 2 weeks in excellent condition. Perfect for a sunny border, cut flower garden, herb garden, or edible garden.
