COMING SOON - Yucca filamentosa - ADAM'S NEEDLE
Evergreen perennial with broad sword-shaped leaves and cream white flowers in large panicles.
Basal rosettes of leaves reach 2-3' of height and width, flowering stalks can be 5-6' tall or taller, flowers in June/July.
Full sun, half shade, average soils - dry to medium moist (average moisture). Prefers somewhat drained soil, can be surprisingly tolerant to shade, especially on well drained soils. Tolerant to shallow soils, salt pollution, heat, humidity and drought, grows virtually in any soil, including drier clay.
Originally could be found on sandy soils, open sandy woodlands or beaches in south, southeast and east of USA, but often escaped cultivation and naturalized elsewhere, see the USDA distribution map.
Hardy in zones 5 to 10, deer and rabbit resistant plants, tolerates black walnuts.
Doesn't suffer with diseases, in time forms wider clumps to small colonies from it's offsets. The main pollinators are yucca moths, but can attract some butterflies too.
Great structural perennial for sunny borders, dry soil areas and slopes, bigger containers, areas where salt is splashed (traffic islands), looks well in seaside gardens and with rocks too. Can be combined with many common perennials, but looks the best with plants with more fine structure like Coreopsis, Euphorbia, Gaillardia, Nepeta, Lavandula, but also with Rudbeckia fulgida var. deamii, Rudbeckia missouriensis, Echinacea or medium to smaller sized grasses.
Pot size : square 3.5" x 5" deep pot
