Origin: Northeastern Asia (China, Mongolia, Korea and Russia). Can be found on grassy slopes, in grasslands and rock or sandy river beds.

Plant combinations: Showy and easy plant for the front of the flower borders, rock gardens, edges, crevices, and drained or dry soils.
It can be combined with many sun-loving perennials. It meets in bloom time and looks good with the yellow colors of Achillea 'Moonshine', Coreopsis, Oenothera, and Rudbeckia missouriensis, with the orange flowers of Asclepias tuberosa, the purples of Callirhoe, and the shorter cultivars of Echinacea. Other good companions can be Dianthus, Heuchera (in drier, half shade), shorter bearded Irises, Penstemon, Thymus, Teucrium, Satureja, Saponaria and medium to smaller grasses like Koeleria, Sporobolus, Muhlenbergia, Stipa, shorter Schizachyrium.
