Tough native fern, once established very drought tolerant.

1.5-2' tall and wide, non-spreading. Leaves are evergreen, but stays nice only in spots protected from winter winds.

Half shade, shade, dry shade. Adaptable to soil types - average soils, humusy, acidic, rich soil, will grow in dry clay and dry shade. Average moist, moist to drier soil. Thrives in drained soils in shade.

Also called Leatherwood Fern, Marginal Shield Fern and Eastern Wood Fern, fern native to eastern half of USA and Canada, often can be found in rocky deciduous woodlands, bluffs and presence of rocky soils. See the USDA distribution map.

Hardy in zones 3 to 8. Deer and rabbit resistant.

For shade garden, half shade garden, woodland gardens, dry shade, mixes well with spring bulbs, native woodland wildflowers, Hosta, Heuchera and Carex.
