Gentiana 'True Blue' - GENTIAN 'TRUE BLUE'
Well branched with 2" upward facing flowers blooming from mid summer to early fall. Has shiny leaves, sturdy stems and flowers from the bottom up.
Longer-lived perennial and easy in average soils!
Blooming Time: mid summer to early/mid fall (about mid/late July to early/mid September)
Size: 24-30"' tall and 12-18" wide clumps
USDA Zones: 4 to 7/8
Culture: Full sun, half sun, half shade (4-6 hours of sun). Adaptable to any pH, average soils with some organic matter to loamy soil.
Moisture Needs: medium, medium-dry, medium-moist, seems to do well in humid areas
Origin: Introduced by plant breeder Darrell Probst. 'True Blue' comes from a controlled cross (2001) between an unnamed plant of a hybrid of Gentiana makinoi (Japanese Gentian) as the female parent and an unnamed plant of unknown botanical origin as the male parent (possibly a species or hybrid related to Gentiana scabra - Rindō Flower, Japanese Gentian). Neither of the parent were patented. ‘True Blue’ was selected in August 2004 as a single unique plant amongst the resulting seedlings and patented under number PP20433 in October 2009. This cultivar is usually propagated from cutting, divisions or tissue culture (clonally propagated).
Black Walnut Tolerant: yes
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes/yes
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: butterflies
Attracts Hummingbirds: no
Pot Size: square 3.5" x 4" deep pot
Plant Combinations: Excellent plant for the middle or front of the flower bed. Can be combined with majority of common perennials for sun or half shade, but it may look the best with more delicate plants like Calamintha or Coroeopsis verticilata (and it's cultivars) or fine leaves of medium-sized grasses (Eragrostis, Muhlebergia, Sporobolus, Sesleria or Schizachyrium). Or with smaller cultivars of Echinacea, smaller Iris, Hemerocallis with more grassy leaves or smaller Rudbeckia.
