Geranium x oxonianum 'Rebecca Moss' - HARDY GERANIUM 'REBECCA MOSS' (cranesbill)
Filling perennial and groundcover with very pale pink flowers (nearly white) that fade to soft pink. Vigorous and drought tolerant. Slowly spreads into wider clump.
We have tried various hardy Geraniums and this one seems to be one that actually is not bothered by the hot and humid climate and continues to thrive (many geraniums come from cooler or mountainous areas and don't do the greatest with high humidity).
Sometimes the clump opens and can look a bit untidy, but reacts very well to cutting back and regrows quickly.
Easy to grow, it's good to divide the clump after 5+ years or so. It seems to be longer or long-lived plant for us.
Blooming Time: the major blooming period is from late spring to mid summer. Summer heat usually stops them from blooming, but they will continue blooming in cooler areas till very late summer (with less flowers)
Size: 32" tall x 24-28" wide, in time forms wider clump
USDA Zones: 4-8
Culture: full to partial shade, adaptable to soils. Appreciates some organic matter (compost, organic mulch, composted leaves), soil doesn't have to be too fertile. Avoid waterlogged and poorly draining soils.
Moisture Needs: average moisture (medium) to medium-dry.
Origin: selection from British plant and hardy Geranium breeder Robin Moss. Named after his daughter and introduced in 1993. Geranium x oxonianum is hybrid of Geranium endresii (native to Western Pyrenees - border of Spain and France) and Geranium versicolor (Mediterranean).
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes / yes
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: no / honeybees and some smaller native bees
Attracts Hummingbirds: no
Pot Size: square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot
Plant Combinations: Due to it's adaptability can be combined with many common perennials - native and introduced. The best is to use it in the middle part of flower bed and use it's character of filling plant, that can cover some imperfections of taller plants behind it (Aster, Helenium, tall Phlox - that usually loose the bottom leaves). Another great placing is in the sunny or half-shade parts of woodland edge garden and as a groundcover in smaller or medium sized patches. Goes well and nicely contrasts with all common grasses and vertical taller plants.
Fits well in traditional cottage garden border ("English garden style"), and any other eclectic flower beds
