'Limoncello' = avens hybrid with single lemon yellow, up-facing flowers on 12-15" red stems. Flower size 1 and 1/4".
One of the heaviest Avens bloomers. Good cultivar in Chicago Botanic Gardens trials, gaining 4 out of 5 possible stars.
Blooms from early May to mid June.
Clumps of fuzzy semi-evergreen leaves, 16" wide clumps. More or less ground-covering mounds.
Full sun, half-shade, preferably loamy soils, loamy clay, organic rich soils, that stay medium to medium-moist (but NOT waterlogged).
Avens do like cooler climate, areas with cooler nights - so they will perform better in upper Midwest or coastal areas, in hotter climate find cooler spot in half shade (afternoon/early evening shade).
They will tolerate some summer droughts (each cultivar differs some), but leaves may scorch or turn brown and plant will re-sprout with more moisture.
Deer and rabbit resistant plant, butterfly and bee friendly.
Hardy in zones 4 - 7.
'Limoncello' was introduced by famous plantsman Brent Horvath (Intrinsic Perennial Gardens, Hebron, Illinois). This cultivar belongs to Cocktail Series Avens.
Geum x hybrids are excellent border perennials, with flowers reminding of little roses (they belong to Rose family - Rosaceae), they go well with many perennials, best planted in the front of the flower bed.
Good combination are with Amsonia, hardy Geraniums, Iris, Nepeta, Heuchera, Paeonia, Salvia or any other border perennials and medium sized grasses like Sporobolus, Schizachyrium or shorter cultivars of Panicum.
Geums tolerate half-shade, so they can combined with half-shade, dappled sun/shade woodland edge/ woodland perennials - Aquilegia, Anemone x hupehensis, Chelone, Chrysogonum, Dicentra, Gillenia, Helleborus, Heuchera, Hosta, Lobelia, Primula, Polemonium, Polygonatum, Polygonum, Tradescantia, Tricyrtis, Spigellia, or sedges - Carex.
