Native biennial or short-lived perennial that persist by self-seeding.

Unique vertical unbranched plant with orange/orange-red tubular flowers, fine fresh green leaves.

Standing hummingbird feeder.

Easy to grow - requires only sun and drained soil.

Has many common reagional names like scarlet gilia, red gilia or Texas plume.

Blooming time : early to mid summer fall (sometimes can bloom up to August)
Size: 3' - 6' tall x 0.25' wide (the height depends on the fertility of the soil and moisture - in leaner and drier soil will reach about 3')
USDA Zones: 6b to 9b
Culture: full sun is the best or at least 6+ hours of direct sun. Adaptable and easy - any soil that drains well (loam, gritty, sandy gravelly, shallow soil) Tolerant to heat and humidity.
Moisture Needs: average = medium, medium-dry, dry

Plant Combinations: For sunny garden and drained soil, bigger rock gardens, gravel gadens, sandy or gritty soils. Good companions are Agastache, Amsonia, Antennaria, Asclepias tuberosa, Baptisia, Coreopsis, Cunila origanoides, Dalea, Eryngium, Echinacea, Gaillardia, Gaura, Liatris, Penstemons, Ruellia, Stokesia, Verbena canadensis, Yucca, native grasses like Boutelloa gracilis or B. curtipendula, Muhlenbergia, Sporobolus heterolepis (or non-native Sesleria), Panicum.
