Limonium latifolium - SEA LAVENDER
Interesting and long-lived, non-invasive perennial with rough basal leaves combined with very fine cloud structure of small purple-blue flowers.
Proven as reliable plant in hot and humid Midwestern climate! Effective in summer, fall and winter.
Usually grows to 2.5' tall and wide, wide leathery leaves stay in rosettes and are semi-evergreen. Flowers in July-August, but the transparent airy flowers persist to late fall.
Leaves turn dark red with cold temperatures.
Full sun, average and somewhat drained soils with average (medium) moisture to dry. Tested in average to dry clay and it does well. Don't plant to waterlogged soils.
Dislikes to be transplanted, so choose the site wisely. For dried flowers, harvest the flowering stems before flowers fully open and dry in well aired cool and shady room.
High tolerance to salt. Heat, humidity and drought tolerant.
Deer and rabbit resistant. Pollinator friendly - attracts honeybees and butterflies, potentially some native pollinators too.
Native to Southeastern Europe (Romania, Bulgaria and Southern Russia).
Hardy in zones 4 to 9.
Best in sunny, hot garden, rock garden, dry garden, coastal garden or cut flower garden. For it's fine mist-like look is best to combined with more rough structures of plants like Baptisia, Echinacea, Liatris, Penstemon digitalis, Paeonia, Perovskia, Silphium, and bigger grasses like Pennisetum, Panicum or Sorghastrum. Or any other drought tolerant plants.
