Luzula nivea - SNOWY WOOD RUSH
Semi-evergreen woodland/woodland edge, clumping grass.
Ornamental loose, shorter leaves with very hairy edges. Highly ornamental whitish flowers.
Stays in clumps, but can be used as groundcover in smaller patches (if planted more densely).
Quite low-maintenance plant - in the spring clean off the dry leaves only.
Blooming Time: late spring-early summer
Size: leaves form only 6-8" tall and wide clump, with flowers 1.5-2' tall. Flower open into vase shape clumps.
USDA Zones: 4 to 9 (heat zones 4-9), but probably better for temperate or cooler areas
Culture: partial shade, dappled shade, full shade. Adaptable to soil types, soils of any pH. Prefers moderately fertile or leaner (average) soils with some organic material or organic mulch (leaf debris) and average moisture (medium). Avoid waterlogged and poorly draining soils. Doesn't tolerate sun.
Moisture Needs: average (medium) to medium-moist or medium-dry
Origin: native to deciduous or mixed woodlands of Southwestern and Central (including Alps and Pyrenees).
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes / yes
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: no / no
Attracts Hummingbirds: no
Pot Size: square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot
Plant Combinations: More or less groundcovering clumps can be combined with any half shade or shade tolerant plant - Actaea (Cimicifuga), Alchemilla, Anemone japonica, Bergenia, Brunnera, Dicentra, Digitalis, Epimedium, hardy Geranium (G. maculatum, G. phaeum), , Geum, Helleborus, Hepatica, Hosta, Iris cristata, Lathyrus vernus, Persicaria, Phlox divaricata, Phlox stolonifera, Primula, Polygonatum, Pulmonaria, Salvia koyame, Scutellaria, Stylophorum, Tricyrtis, Uvularia and ferns. Looks wonderful with more fine structures of grasses like Carex (both narrow and wide- leaved), Chasmantium, Deschamspia, Hakonechloa, Hystrix, or Melica.
Goes well with bulbs (Anemone blanda, Narcissus) and native spring ephemerals like Claytonia, Dodecatheon, Hepatica, Mertensia, Jeffersonia, Sanguinaria, Trillium and others.
Pot size: square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot
