White flowering form of old-fashioned short-lived perennial that persist in your garden by self seeding. White flowers are neutral and easier to combine with other flowers.
2-3' tall x 1-1.5' wide, rosettes of very fuzzy-gray leaves, well branched stems with cream-white flowers is May/June-July. It doesn't bloom for very long, but the woolly leaves are quite ornamental and stay evergreen.
Full sun, half shade, any soil that is medium moist to dry. Prefers drained or well drained soils. It will grow even in clay, if it's medium-dry to dry clay. Excessive winter moisture can cause crown rot = loosing the plant, so don't plant to the waterlogged soils.
The preference/tolerance to drier/drained soils is obvious. Grows well in shallow soils.
We have tried it several times in dry shade, the plants still do grow there, but lean a bit towards the sun. This is pushing the plant to it's limits, but they are adaptable.
Short-lived perennial, sometimes even grown as biennial that stays around by self seeding. Unwanted seedlings can be very easily removed.
Rose campion produces a lot of seeds, that are quite heavy and drop under or close by the original plant and make colonies of seedling. This may be reason, why it is considered "invasive" or introduced in northeastern states, but we have never seen it escape the gardens. Cutting the spent flower back reduces the amount of seedlings. Seeding happens mostly only on bare soil (so it is opportunistic plant) and colony - carpet of seedling can have groundcovering effect.
Hardy in zones 4 to 8.
Deer and rabbit resistant. Black walnut tolerant (we tested in our yard). Pollinator friendly (honey bees, some butterflies and also hummingbirds - especially the magenta red flowers).
Heat, drought and humidity tolerant plant. Native from southern and southeastern Europe to Western Asia and also in Africa.
Easy to grow plant, can be grown in flower bed with average moisture or in dry conditions. Easily combined with majority of common perennials and grasses. Great plant for moon gardens (white-themed gardens), because both leaves and flowers are "white".
