Marshallia caespitosa - BARBARA'S BUTTONS
Showy smaller perennial with mounds of evergreen leaves and white pinkish flowers from April/May to June.
10-14" tall x 6-8" wide.
Full sun to half shade. Average soil with average moisture (medium to medium-moist) to dry or somewhat drained soils.
Drought and dry soil tolerant. Average soil, loam, sandy loam, sandy, gritty, rocky soil.
Native to AR, KS, LA, MO, OK, TX, where can be found on variety of soils (calcerous, limestone, sandy, loamy clay), altogether with little bluestem or lance-leaved coreopsis.
Hardy in zones 5 to 8.
Deer resistant, but rabbits may feed on the plant.
Fragrant flowers attract native bees and butterflies.
Best in sunny bed with drained soil, slopes, rock gardens, crevices, xeriscape...combined with smaller to medium-sized perennials and grasses. Good companions are smaller Achillea, Agastache (Kudos series, 'Rosie Posie' etc.), Allium 'Summer Beauty' and other summer blooming perennial Allium, Asclepias verticillata, Asclepias tuberosa, Asteromea mongolica, Calamintha nepeta, Callirhoe, Coreopsis, shorter cultivars of Echinacea, Dianthus, shorter Gaura, Monarda (punctata, bradburiana), Knautia, Iris x barbata (bearded Iris), Limonium, Liatris, Nepeta x faasenii hybrids, Penstemon, creeping Phloxes, Rudbeckia (missouriensis, fulgida var. deamii, 'American Gold Rush' or 'Little Susie'), Ruellia humilis, Salvia, Sedum, Sisyrinchium, Stachys 'Humello', Stokesia, Veronica spicata or creeping veronica, and grasses like Bouteloua, Festuca, Muhlenbergia, Koeleria cristata, schizachyrium scoparium, Sporolobolus.
