Meehania cordata - CREEPING MINT
For Meehan's Mint (the other common name), let's quote its introduction from Mt. Cuba:
"If you are looking for a novel groundcover, Meehan’s mint is the perfect choice. This deciduous herbaceous perennial groundcover spreads nicely in part shade and moist well-drained to average soils with foliage reaching only 1-2” tall. Beginning in late spring, it produces attractive lavender flowers with dark spots on upright stems 3-4” tall above the foliage. Meehan’s mint spreads slowly, but is perfect for the early summer garden when other plants have stopped flowering. This gem is an excellent complement planted among moss and a good companion with a wide variety of plants including Scutellaria serrata, Thalictrum clavatum, Aquilegia canadensis, Carex plantaginea, Phlox stolonifera and Chrysogonum virginianum."
Despite its "mint" name, it is odorless.
This plant is good for drier shade, but doesn't spread as well there. Drought tolerant. Ground cover perennial for shade gardens, woodland gardens, shady border areas, shady parts of rock gardens, and difficult dry shade spots.
Great substitute for invasive Ajuga reptans (buggleweed) or Lamium maculatum (spotted dead nettle), Lamium galeobdolon (yellow archangel) and Vinca (periwinkle). Excellent hosta combination plant and companion.
