Opuntia humifusa - EASTERN PRICKLY PEAR
Zone 4 to 9 cold hardy native cacti for drier sun garden. 3" large flowers attracts many native bees and other pollinators.
Grows to 6-10" of height, oval to round greenish pads with needle-like spines (handle with thick leather gloves). Yellow flowers in June to July.
Full sun, half sun, adaptable to soils, but always well drained soils, including sandy, rocky soils, medium-dry to dry. Tolerates dry clay.

Deer and rabbit resistant. Tolerates well heat and humidity. Fruits are edible.
Attracts long-tongued and short-tongued bees - including bumblebees, the Large Carpenter Bee, digger bees, leaf-cutting bees, Halictid bees (including green metallic bees), plasterer bees.
Long-tongued bees suck nectar or collect pollen, while short-tongued bees collect pollen only, the bigger specias are the main pollinators. Host plants for larvae of the Eastern Cactus-boring Moth, polyphagous moth, Julia's Dicymolomia, Arge Tiger Moth and larvae of a Syrphid fly. Other insects feed on plant juices from the pads or fruits of these plants (Prickly Pear Cactus Bug, Pale-margined Stink Bug, and Uhler's Stink Bug.
Best in xeriscape, rock garden, troughs, crevice gardens, Mediterannean gardens, roof gardens, dry and hot spots, sandy soils or on the dry edges of pollinator gardens. Combine with low drought tolerant perennials and grasses like Agastache 'Kudos series', Artemisia schmidtiana 'Nana', Calamintha nepeta, Calamintha arkansana, Coreopsis verticillata + vert. hybrids, Dianthus, Delosperma, Euphorbia (myrsinites, martinii), Erigeron pulchellus, Eryngium, short cultivars of Gaura, Gaillardia, Geranium (cinereum, renardii), Iris x barbata 'Nana', Iris tectorum, Nepeta 'Kitten Around', Penstemon (x mexicalii, hirsitus and western species), Phemeranthus, Ratibida 'Red Midget', Ruellia humilis, Rudbeckia missouriensis, R. hirta, Salvia nemorosa, Stachys byzantina, Talinum paniculatum,...and grasses like Bouteloua gracilis, Koeleria cristata, Festuca glauca, Muhlenbergia 'Undaunted'.
