Osmunda cinnamomea - CINNAMON FERN
Impressive deciduous native fern, suitable for woodland garden or wet soil in the shade.
Low maintenance fern, pest and disease free fern, recipient of Garden Merit Award by Royal Horticultural Society (UK) for it's outstanding qualities.
2-3' tall and wide, fertile fronds turn brown and remind of cinnamon sticks. Young leaves grow upright in narrower vase-shaped clump, and later open into wide, gracefully arching plants.
Half sun, half shade, dappled shade, full (deep) shade, adaptable to many soil types. Prefers moist, organic rich, humusy and slightly acidic soils with medium, medium-moist, moist to wet soil with standing shallow water.
Newer scientific name is Osmundastrum cinnamomeum.
It's native range starts in Texas and runs diagonally north east across USA, see the USDA distribution map. Naturally can be found along the streams, moist, boggy woodlands and bluffs, sandy woodlands, seeps, peaty bogs in high quality natural areas.
Hardy in zones 3 to 9.
Deer, rabbit and black walnut resistant plant. Host plant for larvae of several moths. Tolerates constantly wet soil and is happy in high humidity.
Best in woodland gardens, shade garden, native plant gardens, deer and rabbit resistant planting, also naturalized along streams, water gardens and shade corners.
