Switchgrass cultivar with great manageable garden size, sharp concord-grape colored leaves from late summer on.
Compact erect clumps with multi-seasonal interest.
Great for big containers, smaller spaces, low maintenance plantings, larger public areas (block plantings). Also suitable for flower arranging and drying too.
Tolerant to black walnut, heat and humidity.
Size : 3' tall (2' without flowers) x 1.5' wide clumps
Blooming time : late summer to fall/winter
USDA zones : 4 to 9
Culture : sun, half sun, adaptable to various soil conditions, average soil, loam, clay soil, gritty soil, lean soil, seaside areas with salt exposure. Soils should be neutral to slightly acidic
Moisture Needs : medium-moist, medium (average), medium-dry, tolerates droughts.
Origin : "Garden origin" - crossed by Gary M. Trucks in the summer of 2002 between Panicum virgatum ‘Rostrahlbush’ × Panicum virgatum ‘Amber Wave’ at a nursery in Benton Harbor, Michigan and selected for further observation in the summer of 2003. Patented plant under PP23209 - propagation for commercial purposes is prohibited. Part of PRAIRIE WINDS® Collection and PROVEN WINNERS.
Deer/rabbit resistant : yes/yes
Attracts Hummingbirds : no, but attracts small song birds
Attracts pollinators : no
Pot Size : square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot
Plant combinations : Great performer for small gardens, seaside areas, public plantings, low maintenance and sustainable plantings. Seedheads look great against backlight.
Offers endless combinations with majority of common perennials for sun (those that prefer drier or medium-moist conditions). Look good with bigger flowers (and seedheads) of big flowers like Echinacea, Rudbeckia, but also fall Asters, Chelone, taller Coreopsis, Helenium, Heliopsis, Helianthus, Hemerocallis (later blooming ones), herbaceous Hibiscus, tall Phloxes, Physostegia.
