Patrinia scabiosifolia - GOLDEN VALERIAN

Product Code: PAT-SCA-X
Shipping: Calculated at Checkout
$8.99

Unique long flowering and late flowering showy "carrot" that flowers from June/July  to September! Most members of the carrot family (Apiaceae, Umbelliferae) are annuals, biennials or short-lived plants that bloom in first half of the season. But "Golden Lace" (which is another common name) is perennial with unusually late and very long flowering period.

It's actually three-season plant - the emerging leaves are usually reddish, the fall color is red to burgundy red and if you don't cut the stems in late fall, they stay ornamental throughout the winter.

Usually 4-6' tall x 1.5-2" wide (for shorter stems, cut back in May). Full sun, average soil or rich soil, with average moisture (medium moist).

Plants can flop if planted in half-shade or shade!

Hardy in zones 5 to 8, this perennial originates in Japan and Korea. Tolerant to heat and humidity. Attracts pollinators -  mostly flies, bees and wasps, but occasionally butterflies too.

This plants is incredible - because it flowers for so long, it meets in bloom with many summer and fall perennials and simply looks striking - the best companions are Echinacea purpurea, Eupatorium purpureum, Rudbeckia, Liatris, Phlox paniculata, Veronicastrum, Verbena bonariensis (annual), Vernonia, Solidago, Lobelia (L. siphilitica, L. cardinalis), Salvia guaranatica, Sanquisorba or grasses like Panicum virgatum or Schuzachyrium scoparium.

Still not sure about this plant, then visit garden of Nancy J. Ondra in Pensylvannia!

For sunny border, cottage garden, naturalistic gardens, pollinator gardens.

  • Done well in the first year 5

Posted by Jake on Aug 05 2021

Arrived well rooted and planted in early Spring into low/medium moisture half shade in my mid-Atlantic garden. Started blooming late July with clear yellow flowers rising around 2.5ft tall. I expect this will grow much taller and will be a late summer favorite.

This Golden Valerian was such a lovely surprise. It is a stunning plant, and grows 5’+ in my garden. Unfortunately it’s planted right in front of my yellow butterfly bush and just north of my Zizia (Golden Alexanders, so there’s a lot of sunshine in that bed. No wonder your stock is out for this year!
