Penstemon barbatus 'Twizzle Purple' - BEARD-LIP BEARTONGUE 'TWIZZLE PURPLE'
Narrow, upright plant with evergreen basal leaves. Wonderful, transparent, vertical accent for sunny and dry gardens.
Shorter-lived perennial - the clumps have to be divided to renew the vigor of the plant, or can be grown from seeds.
Blooming Time: May/June to June/July
Size: 35" tall and 12-18" wide
USDA Zones: 5 to 8
Culture: full sun, partial sun. Best in soils with some drainage (gravel, coarse sand, haydite, gritty soils, sandy soils). Avoid waterlogged and wet soils. We have grown succesfully the 'Coccineus' cultivar (orange-red), which is not bothered much by the humidity or heat, so we expect this one to be similarly successful.
Moisture Needs: medium-dry, dry
Origin: Introduced by Van Hemert & Co., as a part of Twizzle Series. The species of P. barbatus is native to AZ, CO, NM, TX, UT, where can be found on rocky slopes, open woodlands and mesas.
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes / yes
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: yes - pollinator friendly
Attracts Hummingbirds: yes
Pot Size: square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot
Plant combinations: Great for Xeriscape, dry beds with drained soil, rock gardens, crevices, and drained or dry soils.
It can be combined with many sun-loving, drought tolerant perennials like Achillea 'Moonshine', Asclepias tuberosa, Calamintha, Callirhoe, Coreopsis, Dalea, Dianthus, Echinacea (with narrow leaves), Eryngium, Iberis, bearded Iris, Oenothera, other Penstemon, Rudbeckia missouriensis, Salvia, Thymus, Teucrium, Yucca and medium to smaller grasses like Koeleria, Sporobolus, Muhlenbergia, Stipa, Schizachyrium.
