Penstemon 'Prairie Dusk' - BEARDTONGUE 'PRAIRIE DUSK'
Low maintenance penstemon with rose-purple or pink-purple flowers, bee friendly, good butterfly and hummingbird plant.
Easy to grow, tough selection from Dale Lindgren at University Nebraska, beardtongue hybrid that is cold, heat, humidity, drought and salt tolerant.
24-30" tall x 15-18" wide clumps of mostly evergreen leaves, flowers in early summer.
Full sun (6+ hours), average soil, drained soil, shallow soils, with average moisture (medium) to medium-dry or dry. Better drainage means better longevity. Adaptable to all soil pH.
Hardy in zones 3 to 8.
Best in sunny beds, dry meadows, shallow soils, roof gardens, in sandy, rocky soils, rock gardens, pollinator gardens, bigger containers, low maintenance gardens, xeric gardens or hummingbird gardens.
Looks wonderful with plants that meet and contrast in color and structures - like Achillea 'Moonshine', Achillea millefolium (yellow and orange flowering cultivars), Aquilegia chrysantha, Aquilegia canadensis, Coreopsis auriculata or C. auriculata 'Nana', Euphorbia polychroma, Echinacea paradoxa, Engelmannia peristenia, Oenothera macrocarpa, Oenothera 'Fireworks', Oenothera 'Cold Crick'.
Other good companions are perennials like Agastache, Asclepias (tuberosa, verticillata), Aster (A. leavis, A. oblongifolius, A. novae-angliae), Calamintha, Gaura, Geranium sanquineum, Helianthemum, Eryngium, Echinacea, bearded Iris, Liatris, Monarda (M. fistulosa, M. punctata), Nepeta, Perovskia, Ruellia humillis, Salvia nemorosa hybrids, Sedum, Stachys, Stokesia, Solidago and medium sized grasses like Bouteloa, Eragrostis, Muhlenbergia, Sporobolus or Stipa.
