Penstemon strictus - ROCKY MOUNTAIN PENSTEMON
Rocky Mountain beardtongue is one of the easy to grow western species of Penstemons even here in Midwest.
It requires full sun and well drain, medium moist to dry soils (shallow, rocky, sandy, drained). Native wildflower to Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and New Mexico, Utah, Arizona and California.
Grows to 24-30" tall x 30" wide, evergreen leaves, large deep blue, changeful flowers with purple shine. Flowers from mid to late spring/early summer.
Very hardy, zones 4 to 9, but good to sharp drainage is essential.
Excellent for drier, drained soils, rock gardens, crevices. Good hummingbird plant, native pollinator plant.
