Persicaria amplexicaulis 'Alba' - MOUNTAIN FLEECE 'ALBA'
White-flowering form of Mountain Fleece.
Hardy and easy to grow perennial from Himalaya, 3-4' tall and wide, more or less groundcovering clumps with 6" long spikes of white flowers from June to September.
Full sun to half shade, it appreciates some afternoon shade in hotter climates, but it does well in quite hot Indianapolis (Newfields gardens). Too much shade = leggy plants.
It likes moisture, medium-moist (average) to wet soil, grows better in heavier soil, clayish soils and loam.
Hardy in zones 4-7, deer and rabbit resistant.
Other names are Polygonum amplexicaule, Bistorta amplexicaulis.
Leave some room for this plant, since the clumps will get wider in time. It may re-seed a little, but it's more rare than common, the seedlings may differ from the original plant. It's said that this plant attracts butterflies and birds, but we haven't observed it yet (but our plants have been just planted).
Looks great in flower beds, on the edges of woodland gardens, clearings in woodland garden, in rain gardens, pond margins, cottage gardens, moon gardens (white gardens).
Good companions are Asters, Agastache foeniculum or hybrids, Asclepias incarnata, Eupatorium, Hemerocallis (daylily), Leucanthemum superbum, Sanquisorba, Veronicastrum and taller grasses like Panicum, Andropogon gerardii, Pennisetum.
This plant goes well with hosta, where hostas are planted in half shade or gets half a day of sunshine.
Pot size : round pot 3.5" x 5.5" deep
