Well-known spring flowering perennial with nice mounding habit, delicate fern-like divided leaves and blue bell-shaped flowers. Spreads slowly by short rhizomes, more often it will reproduce by seed. Great pollinator plant, effective ground covering, tolerant to black walnuts!
Ideal perennial for naturalizing in half shaded areas, woodland gardens, woodland edges, rock gardens, rain or bog gardens. Looks great with Aquilegia canadensis, Mertensia virginica, woodland sedges (Carex), some Heucheras or Phloxes, Polygonatum, Hostas or native ferns.
Blooming Time: end of spring, April-May
Size: usually 1-1.5’ high and wide

Culture: half shade, shade, preferably rich medium-moist to moist loamy soils. It will tolerate sandy soils, acid, neutral or alkaline pH and more sun with regular moisture in the soil.

Origin: Native through most of the Eastern United States west to Minnesota, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and also in Canada. Usually found under the canopy of deciduous trees, along streams and river banks, on wooded slopes, etc.

Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: good pollinator/nectar plant for native bees, some butterflies, skippers and moths.
Attracts Hummingbirds: no, but good for other bird life
