Potentilla thurberi - SCARLET CINQUEFOIL
Clump forming perennial, native to the coniferous mountain of Arizona and New Mexico, in the elevation from 6000 ft to 9000 ft.
Basal leaves remind of strawberry leaves, stems bear dark velvety red flowers (about 1''). Flower peak is in early to mid-summer. Mounds of leaves are about 1.5' tall x 0.5-0.75' wide.
It is very adaptable to soil types, but they have to be drain (so even clayish soil is ok, if it's drained or not waterlogged). Grows in ful sun, half shade or even dappled light shade. Since once establish, it is drought tolerant.
Deer resistant perennial and valuable plant for native bees.
Best planted is sunny or half shade borders (in the front or middle), in low maintenance plantings, cottage gardens, drought tolerant plantings. The flowering clusters are airy and natural looking, so the good perennial companions can be plants with more robust structure like Asclepias tuberosa, Eryngium, Echinacea, Geraniums, Lavandula, Nepeta, Paeonia, Salvia nemorosa, Sedum telephium, but also Penstemon or Gaura, and grasses like Sporobolus, Schizachyrium scoparium, smaller cultivars of Panicum or Pennisetum.
