Underused, tough and long-lived perennial. Flowers in the summer for 8+ weeks!
Bold-structured perennial with larger shiny leaves.
For it's noteworthy qualities awarded with Award of Garden Merit (RHS, 2002).
Blooming Time: July-August (mid to late summer)
Size: usually around 6’ tall x 3’ wide, spacing 18-24". In poor condition only 4-5' tall, in good conditions up to 7' tall.
USDA Zones: 5 to 9
Culture: full sun to half shade, grows best in full or partial sun. It prefers moderately rich (average) soils with medium to moisture. Adaptable to any pH, heavy clay. Likes wet feet and tolerates short-term flooding, but once established, it's quite drought tolerant. Heat and humitity tolerant.
Moisture Needs: medium-dry, medium, medium-wet, wet
Origin: The species of R. laciniata (Rudbeckia nitida) is native to most states in the USA, except the coastal western states. See the Bonap distribution map
Black Walnut Tolerant: yes
Deer/Rabbit Resistant: yes / yes (but we observed some deer nibbling on new leaves in early spring)
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: native bees and butterflies
Attracts Hummingbirds: no, but attracts small birds
Pot Size: 3.5" x 4" perennial pot (1.22 pt/580 ml)
Plant combinations: Excellent perennial for the background of a sunny border, cottage garden, moist meadows, prairie planting, pollinator garden, bird garden, rain garden or for naturalizing.
Goes well with the majority of common perennials for average to moist soil. Good companions can be Actaea (Cimicifuga), Amsonia, Baptisia, herbaceous Hibiscus hybrids, Hemerocallis, Eupatorium, moisture loving Irises (I. sibirica, I. virginica I. versicolor, I. pseudata etc), Liatris, Monarda, Phlox paniculata, Physostegia virginiana, other Rudbeckia, Sanquisorba, Stachys officinalis hybrids ('Summer Romance', etc), Veronicastrum and medium and tall grasses (Andropogon gerardii, Calamagrostis, Panicum, Sorghastrum nutans, Pennisetum - where not invasive, etc.)
