Ruta graveolens 'Jackman's Blue Strain' - COMMON RUE 'JACKMAN'S STRAIN'

Product Code: RUT-GRA-JABLST
Shipping: Calculated at Checkout
$8.99

Oddly aromatic Mediterannean plant, old herb and plant used in witchcraft. Deep blue-gray, evergreen or semi-evergreen leaves and chartreuse flowers.

Very pollinator friendly!

Old clump can be cut back to refresh the growth - we recommend to use gloves and long-sleeved shirt - plant can irritate skin! Toxic to mammals, including to humans!

Forms mounds about 2' tall and wide, the base gets woody. Flowers from June/July to August.

Full sun, half sun are the best, average to drained soils with medium (average) moisture to dry. Prefers sandy, gritty, gravelly or rocky soils, sandy loam, in full sun, adaptable. Tolerates clay that drains naturally - don't plant in waterlogged soils. Slightly acidic or neutral soils are the best.

The leaves have very specific odor, maybe up to stench, so it is completely rabbit and deer resistant. Drought and heat tolerant.

Surprisingly this non-native plant is highly attractive to pollinators and butterflies and is also host plant to the Black Swallowtail, Anise Swallowtail and Giant Swallowtail butterflies!

Hardy in zones 4/5 to 9.

Ruta is strong herb, it was used to treat inflammatory conditions, eczema, ulcers, arthritis, fibromyalgia, antidote for venoms, insect repellent, and as an abortifacient, nowadays it's more used in homeotherapy.

Best in sunny and drier bed. Good companions can be other Mediterannean herbs like Allium schoenoprasum (chives), Hyssopus, Lavandula, Origanum, Salvia officinalis, Satureja or Thymus.

looks the best if combined with blue or purple flowers. Good companions are drought tolerant perennials like Achillea ('Moonshine', A. millefolium hybrids), Agastache (Kudos series, 'Rosie Posie' etc.), Allium 'Summer Beauty' and other summer blooming perennial Allium, Asclepias verticillata, Asclepias tuberosa, Asteromea mongolica, Calamintha nepeta, Callirhoe, Coreopsis, Echinacea, Dianthus, Gaura, Monarda (punctata, bradburiana), Knautia, Iris x barbata (bearded Iris), Limonium, Liatris, Nepeta x faasenii hybrids, Penstemon, creeping Phloxes, Rudbeckia (missouriensis, fulgida var. deamii, 'American Gold Rush' or 'Little Susie'), Ruellia humilis, Salvia, Sedum, Sisyrinchium, Stachys 'Humello', Stokesia, Veronica spicata or creeping veronica, and grasses like Bouteloua, Festuca, Muhlenbergia, Koeleria cristata, schizachyrium scoparium, Sporolobolus, Stipa.

Pot size : square 3.5" x 5" deep pot
