Salvia azurea - BLUE SAGE
Blue sage is highly attractive native perennial with sky blue azure flowers in July/August till September.
It is slender looking, upright, unfortunately often flopping plant, 5' tall x 2-3' wide. Prefers full sun, medium-moist to dry soils, preferably drained.
Native to Midwest states and Southeastern United States, see the USDA map of distribution.
Because of it's flopping habbit, it is the best to plant in in not too rich soil, no fertilizing, and preferably drier soils, or cut it half way in mid spring - this will cause lower growing plants. Other way is to let it intermingle with other taller prairie plants. Or let it cascade down from taller wall (way of use in Lurie Garden in Chicago).
Highly attracts native long-tongued bees, bumblebees, butterflies and skippers.
Some breeding on this beautiful plant was done by breeder Joseph Tychoniewich, to promote shorter and not flopping plants, but this strain isn't very often available.
Pot Size : square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot

Blue Sage
Stunning flowers which attract bees and many other pollinators. Also, a real hummingbird magnet. Very vigorous, but can be a little floppy. Some support is helpful, or grow it through taller plants to provide support. A definite keeper!
