$9.99

Showy sage more known in Tradicional Chinese Medicine (TCM) than in horticulture. Trouble free plant with interesting fall color.

Usually grows to 2' in height x 1.5' of width, leaves are pinnatifid (which is less common for sage), roots thick and dark red.

Whorls of fairly big blue-purple flowers in May-June and sporadically even further on, especially if dead-headed. Some leaves turn yellowish with some purple to red-purple with cooler fall temperatures, leaves persists on the plant till late fall.

Full sun to half shade, average to well drained soil with average moisture (medium, medium-dry). Don't plant in waterlogged soils.

Heat, humidity tolerant, established plant also drought tolerant.

We grow this sage for 3 seasons and it's proven to be hardy to zone 6 (6-9 zones) and it's planted in silt-clay, amended with some little sand and compost. Heavier soil seems to be ok, if it drains naturally (is not compacted with heavy machinery or in not low sunken area).

Our plants are quite close to black walnut, so it seems to be black walnut tolerant plant. We also haven't found seedlings around, so it's not heavy seeder that would tend to escape from your garden.

Deer and rabbit resistant, attracts some bees and honeybees.

Native to China and isolated locations in Japan, where can be found on slopes, meadows, streamsides and forests in higher altitudes up to 4000'.

For sunny - half shade bed, herb garden, deer resistant planting. Good sized plant that can be combined with many common perennials. Dried roots are used for cerebrovascular disorders, cardiovascular problems and circulatory disorders, promoting blood circulation and as a general tonic, pancreatitis or as a cancer treatment. Also called Chinese Sage.

Pot size : square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot
