Highly priced perennial for it's transparent "see through" look, fluffy drooping and dangling flowers.
Forms clumps of basal leaves and tall flowering stems, nearly leaf-less, often leaning into one direction. This plant looks very airy, but still structural, and has some enchanting power for many people.
Grows to 5-6' tall x 2-3' wide, flowers in June-July, average soils, adaptable to mostly any soil, that doesn't dry out (loam, clayish, sandy or drained). Hardy in zones 5 to 8.
Attracts butterflies and bees.
This is perennial from medium-moist to moist meadow, so the best is to associate it with similar needs plants, native or introduced :
Anemone japonica, Asclepias incarnata, Aster novae-angliae, Aster novi-belgii, Cimicifuga, Chelone, Eupatorium, Helenium, Helianthus, Heliopsis, Hemerocallis citrina, Hibiscus, moisture loving Iris (I. sibirica, virginica, versiclor, louisiana), tall cultivars of Phlox ('Jeana', 'Shortwood', 'Robert Poore'), Physostegia, Vernonia, Thalictrum, Veronicastrum or tall grasses like Panicum.
