Schizachyrium scoparium 'Carousel' - LITTLE BLUESTEM 'CAROUSEL' (short & non-flopping)
Short cultivar, colorful in the fall, copper brown color in late fall and for the whole winter!
" 'Carousel' is a dwarf and somewhat mounded selection of little bluestem, discovered by Donald Boehm at Boehm's Garden Center in Rushville, Illinois. Mr. Boehm selected 'Carousel' for its unique rounded, bowl-shaped habit, superior resistance to lodging in winter and attractive fall color. Its fine green foliage and distinctive upright flowering stems transform into a kaleidoscope of colors in autumn that includes copper, pink, tan, and dark orange-red. The stems become beige but stay upright and attractive all winter." Chicagolandgrows
2-2.5' tall and wide clumps (leaves about 1.5' tall), fluffy seedheads are ornamental from August to February. Warm season grass (active growth and flowering happens in the warm part of the season).
Full sun, average soil to leaner soil with average moisture to dry. Adaptable, tolerates clay soils, but prefers somewhat poorer soil - too nutrient rich soils + with enough moisture can cause flopping, but it's still less likely than with other cultivars, because 'Carousel' is shorter.
Heat, humidity and drought tolerant. Black walnut tolerant.
Deer and rabbit resistant. Provides habitat and nesting material for birds, small mammals and insects.
Patented cultivar under number PP#20,948 (April 27, 2010), unlicensed propagation is prohibited.
Low maintenance grass - best planted in small groups or masses - roof gardens, poor or shallow and dry soil, traffic islands, naturalistic or prairie planting. Can be combined with many perennials that are drought tolerant - Achillea, Amsonia, Agastache 'Rosie Posie', Allium 'Summer Beauty' and other summer blooming perennial Allium, Asclepias verticillata, Asclepias tuberosa, Calamintha nepeta, Callirhoe, Coreopsis, Echinacea, Gaura, Monarda punctata, Monarda bradburiana, Knautia macedonica, Iris x barbata, Limonium, shorter Liatris, Nepeta x faasenii hybrids, Origanum, Penstemon, creeping Phloxes (Phlox subulata, Phlox nivalis, Phlox bifida and all hybrids), Rudbeckia missouriensis, Rudbeckia 'American Gold Rush' or 'Little Susie', Ruellia humilis, Salvia, Sedum, Sisyrinchium, Thymus, Stachys byzantina, Stokesia, Veronica spicata or creeping Veronica and many others.
