Sedum telephium 'Autumn Joy' ('Herbstfreude') - TALL STONECROP 'AUTUMN JOY'
Long-time favorite and honestly one of the most tough and reliable tall stonecrops!
Deep rose flowers fade to light bronze, light grayish-green succulent leaves.
It does great on European and American continent.
Twice granted by The Award of Garden Merit by RHS (Royal Horticultural Society in Britain)
Flowering time: late summer to early fall - August/September
Size: 18-24" tall x 18-24" wide clumps
USDA zones: 3 to 9
Culture: full sun, half sun, half shade. Average soil with average moisture to drier and drained soil, drier clay, poor soil, rocky, gritty, sandy soils. Avoid wet and waterlogged soils.
Moisture Needs: medium to medium-dry, dry, tolerant to summer droughts, heat and humidity
Origin: Europe, garden selection. It was possibly first grown by Georg Arrends (1863-1952) nursery at Wuppertal Germany near Cologne (under the German equivalent word 'Herbstfreude'). Hybrid between Sedum spectabile and Sedum telephium, officially grown as a cultivar since 1955.
Deer/rabbit resistant: no/yes (depends on the deer pressure, it's browsed whee overpopulated)
Tolerance to black walnut: yes
Attracts Butterflies or Pollinators: butterflies, including Monarchs, honey bees, some native bees
Attracts Hummingbirds: occasionally
Plant combinations: Beds, larger rock garden, large containers, pollinator garden. Good companions van be Achillea millefolium (cultivars), Asclepias tuberosa, Dalea, Echinacea purpurea cultivars, bearded Iris, Lavandula, Nepeta x faasenii cultivars, Origanum vulgare and cultivars, Paeonia, Penstemon, Rudbeckia, Salvia, Salvia nemorosa, Stachys ( 'Humello', 'Summer Romance', 'Pink Cotton Candy'), other Sedum, Thymus, Satureja, Yucca, and grasses (Koeleria, Muhlenbergia, Panicum - shorter selections), Schizachyrium, Sesleria, Sporobolus, Stipa tenuissima.
