Robust native perennial from sandy or rocky river shores, endangered or threatened in many locations.

Biomass production plant in Europe (bio-energy plant) and silage fodder. Anticancer and other herbal properties.

Called also Virginia Fanpetals.

7-10' tall (shorter in drier soils). Typical mallow-lobed leaves. Hairy stems at the early stages of growth, woody base, smaller white flowers in July-August.

Full sun or half shade, hardy in zones 4 to 9.

Native to Midwest and part of mid-Atlantic region, see the BONAP distribution map. Naturally occurs along rivers, on roadsides or along railroad, average soil, drained soil with average (medium) to wet soil. Adaptable to variety of soils including drier, leaner, sandy or clay.

Deer and rabbit resistant, high in nectar and pollen - attracts many native bees and a honeybees a lot too.

Best for naturalizing or as a background plant, in pollinator gardens or honeybee farms. Selfseeds where happy.
