Solidago rigida (Oligoneuron) - STIFF GOLDENROD
Stiff Goldenrod is one of the golderods that looks different and has lot more ornamental look, which makes it more suitable for conventional flower beds.
It grows usually to 4 ' tall x 2.5' wide. The ornamental value goes with the flat flowers, gray looking leaves with rather big basal leaves and nice vertical structure. If it is used as wildflower in prairie type of restoration, these features are not that much visible, but if planted in flower bed in small group or as solitaire, it's structural beauty just show up a lot more. It doesn't have any special needs, full sun, half shade, average soil to clay soil, average moisture. It is also drought tolerant. Flowers in August to September.
It's merits were confirmed in Chicago Botanical Garden comparative study and Solidago trials in 2003 (5-years evaluation program) and Solidago rigida is one of the 6 best performers with full amount of points!
In too amended soils could grow too tall and possibly flop.
It is native to Eastern and northeastern United, see the USDA distribution map. Occurs in tall prairies, glades, open woods, savannas, meadows. Hardy in zones 3 to 9.
Recently was renamed to Oligoneuron rigidum.
It is also excellent pollinator perennial for native bees, wasps, butterflies including monarchs, moths, beetles and pollinating flies (offers both nectar and pollen). Seed are eaten by Eastern Goldfinch, can be occasionally nibbled by the deer and other herbivores.
Goes well with many sun loving perennials, meets in bloom with fall Asters and Panicum virgatum.
Pot Size : square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot

Stiff Goldenrod “Solidago Rigida”
Packaging is well done. I love the identification sticks with the plants’s name and they add my name too.
