Syneilesis aconitifolia - SHREDDED UMBRELLA PLANT
Unusual, hardy and tough perennial, with attractive leaves.
Forms mounds of palmated leaves, usually 1.5' tall x 2' wide. Emerging leaves are very hairy and remind of native mayapple (and shredded umbrella or little ghosts). Flowers are pinkish-white (Aster family), but not ornamental (June-July).
Plants slowly grow wide, to form wider clumps to small colony (about 2' wide in 5-7 years).
Syneilesis is native to Eastern Russia, China, Korea and Japan, where it grows on the hillside margins of woodlands, in areas with some shade during the day, preferably with consistently moist soil.
Half sun, half shade, dappled shade to full shade (full sun in cooler areas), adaptable to soils (average soils, drained, heavier or clayish) with average-moist to moist. Established plants are fairly drought tolerant.
Other scientific name is Senecio aconitifolius.
Hardy in zones 4 to 8.
Deer and rabbit resistant.
Interesting perennial for half-shade or shade garden, woodland garden, Japanese garden or deer resistant planting. Goes well with many shade native and non-native plants. Looks better if there are lower plants around. Combine with Alchemilla, Aquilegia, Ceraostigma, Chrysogonum virginianum, Epimedium, Heuchera, Hosta, Iris cristata, Primula, Pulmonaria, Tiarella, native spring ephemerals, grasses like Carex and Hakonechloa or ferns.
Pot size : square 3.5" x 5" deep pot
