Verbesina alternifolia - WINGSTEM
Wingstem is overlooked plant, and you think,....so "common", so "weedy" or "boring"....(?)
Alright, but look at this plant closely again:
- very late blooming plant, usually ends with first frosts
- the flowers are unusual (have you check them, how beautiful they are?) and are late source of nectar for many species of native bees - especially long-tongued bees, especially bumblebees, but also some short-tongued bees, butterflies, and skippers (and other little insects). It is host plant for Silvery Checkerspot butterfly, Summer Azure butterfly and Gold Moth. The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation recognizes wingstem as having special value to pollinators (especially for the great diversity of bees and wasps).
- this plant is highly adaptable to shade conditions - it can grow in full sun, half shade to deeper shade! And adaptable to moisture - medium-wet, medium, but tolerates some droughts or drier soils too
- is deer and rabbit resistant, and does well under black walnut
Clump forming perennial (doesn't spread by rhizomes, but will self-seed), 6'-8' tall x 2-3' wide, blooms from August to September. Native to Eastern North America, see the USDA distribution map. Hardy in zones 4 to 8.
Wingstem will self-seed, unless you dead-head it, so best is to be used naturalized in meadows, native plant gardens, wildflower meadows, wild pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, woodland edges.
Pot Size : square 3.5" x 4" deep perennial pot
