Vernonia angustifolia 'Plum Peachy' - NARROWLEAF IRONWEED 'PLUM PEACHY'
Nearly unknown perennial beauty, discovered in 1998 by famous plantsman Tony Avent from Plant Delights Nursery (found on grit outcrop inTurner County, Georgia).
44" tall x 24" wide clumps (or wider with age), very narrow leaves remind of Amsonia (Bluestar), foliage has purple-brownish tone since spring and gets stronger in the fall.
Upright clumps are topped with dark purple flowers in July/August (8" wide clusters), flowers attract hummingirds and are butterfly magnet!
Full sun, medium to moist soil, partially drought tolerant once established, but prefers more moisture.
Deer and rabbit resistant, hardy in zones 5a to 8b. Vernonia angustifolia is native to Mississipi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South and North Carolina.
For flower beds, cottage gardens, naturalistic plantings, rain gardens, hummingbird and pollinator or butterfly gardens. Good companions can be Asclepias incarnata, Chelone, Hibiscus moscheutos hybrids, Phlox paniculata, Physostegia virginiana, Persicaria amplexicaulis, medium and taller grasses.
