Golden Alexanders is a wonderful and early flowering perennial.

Native wildflower from Eastern Canada to southern United States, occurs in moist, open woods, meadows, and prairies. It's hardy in zones 3 to 8.

It grows to 2-3' tall and up to 2' wide, the plants itself are more likely shorter-lived, but they will self-seed and stay around. Flat-topped, bright yellow umbels of lacey flowers above coarse, compound, fern-like leaves.

Full sun to half shade, average soil with moderate moisture (tolerates some droughts and also more moist soils).

Attracts butterflies, skippers and moths (foliage is needed for all stages of the black swallowtail butterfly).

Deer resistant, might be nibbled, but it is not preferred.

It is easy to grow perennial, still underused in horticulture, more often used for naturalization or restorations. But this is charming Carrot family plant that surprisingly looks very good in gardens - it perfectly meets in bloom one of the most popular perennials - Salvia nemorosa (or Salvia x sylvestris hybrids) or Amsonia (Blue star)and creates excellent yellow-blue contrast.

Can be used in naturalistic plantings, meadow, woodland edges, open woodland gardens or ditches.

Good perennial combo is also with Amsonias, Iris (I. virginica, I. versicolor, I. sibirica, I. x germanica) and early flowering medium sized Phloxes (Phlox glaberrima interior, Phlox 'Minnie Pearl' , Phlox 'Earlibeauty' series), Geranium sanquineum, Monarda bradburyana, or bulbs like Allium 'Purple Sensation'.

Pot Size : square 3.5" x 5" deep pot
